“I am excited and delighted to add Tim Huelskamp’s endorsement in my primary election for the Sedgwick County Commission in District 3,” said Karl Peterjohn. “This endorsement from a major Kansas conservative leader validates my conservative record in office during the last four years.”

Today former U.S. Representative Todd Tiahrt endorsed Karl Peterjohn for re-election to the Sedgwick County Commission.

Tiahrt represented the fourth district of Kansas in Congress from 1995 to 2011. The fourth district includes all of Sedgwick County.

In his letter, Tiahrt said: “Karl Peterjohn has proven himself as a strong conservative during his first term as a county commissioner. He has fought for fiscal responsibility and economic freedom to strengthen our county’s economy in these difficult times.”

The complete text of the letter follows. For a printable version of the letter click on Todd Tiahrt endorsement letter for Karl Peterjohn. Also, click here to view video on YouTube.

Dear Fellow Republican:

It has been a privilege and honor to represent Kansans and your concerns in Washington for 16 years. Today it is also a privilege to endorse the proven conservative for re-election to the Sedgwick County commission’s third district.

Karl Peterjohn has proven himself as a strong conservative during his first term as a county commissioner. He has fought for fiscal responsibility and economic freedom to strengthen our county’s economy in these difficult times. Karl is the only county official in Kansas who worked for Ronald Reagan while he was governor of California. Peterjohn served as a budget analyst in the California Department of Finance.

During his first term, Karl Peterjohn chaired the county commission and brought unprecedented openness and transparency about the spending of your county tax dollars. Karl led the effort to open up the county’s checkbook to view on line where you can search details about every county tax dollar.

Karl Peterjohn has continually fought to empower Sedgwick County at the ballot box by fighting for a requirement that all tax hikes receive voter approval before any increases can occur. This is especially needed for our property taxes.

While other local units have allowed taxes to go up, Karl voted for a property tax cut in his first year on the commission and has continually fought against wasteful and higher spending. He is fighting against the county’s participation in unnecessary and wasteful federal “sustainability” grants.

I hope that you will join me in supporting Karl Peterjohn for county commission at the August 7, 2012 Republican primary.

For Liberty,

Todd Tiahrt

Karl Peterjohn announces candidacy for reelection

Jan 24, 2012   //   by admin   //   Blog  //  Comments Off on Karl Peterjohn announces candidacy for reelection

On January 20th, Sedgwick County Commissioner Karl Peterjohn announced his intent to run for reelection to the office he presently holds. Following are his remarks at that time.

Friends, thank you for being here this afternoon. I am honored to have you here for my announcement about my candidacy for 2012.

This afternoon I want to announce that I will be seeking reelection as Sedgwick County Commissioner from district 3.

Today I have had the privilege of being the county commissioner for district 3 for just over three years. During this time we have made a number of accomplishments at a time of the worst economy since the Great Depression in the 1930’s.

Since I was elected in 2008, I have worked hard to keep this community safe at as reasonable a cost as possible. The population of the county jail is well below the number when I became a commissioner and lower cost alternatives for keeping this community safe are now being used.

The county checkbook is now online. Sedgwick County taxpayers can now get detailed information about the spending of their tax dollars by individual county employees, including me, but also including all of the elected county officials and detailed budget spending by each individual department I believe open checkbooks are needed and this achievement should occur at all levels of Kansas government. Sedgwick County’s check book is available at Sedgwick County Checkbook.

Today, Sedgwick County’s credit rating with Standard and Poors (S&P) is higher than the federal governments.

I have also fought some fiscal battles for the citizens where I have been in the minority. I believe that the taxpayers will want me to continue in this fight for fiscal accountability in county government, to continue to fight for property tax relief, and for limiting government spending growth.

I will continue to fight for voter empowerment at the ballot box that would require voter approval for any proposed county property tax hikes. I continue to support requiring voter approval for all Kansas governments seeking to raise taxes.

If I am reelected, I will continue to fight to make this county the best place to do business, grow high paying jobs with our exceptional and well trained workforce: Where we have a strong rule of law, protection of people’s rights to own and use their property that is protected from eminent domain abuses, voters will be empowered at the ballot box on tax decisions with economic freedom, free markets, and a level playing field that provides equal opportunity and fairness for all.

We need to grow our county and leave a better place, a better legacy, for our children and our children’s children. We need this foundation of freedom as we follow the Kansas motto, “To the stars through difficulties,” into the rest of the 21st century.
